He is currently a PhD candidate in Islamic Studies at Boston University. His research interests include early and medieval Islamic history, jurisprudence of minorities in Islam, and Islamic ethics and spirituality. MOHAMMAD ABDERRAZZAQ is the author of several encyclopedia articles on various topics, including “Sunnis” and “Khawarij-Ibadiyah” (in Encyclopedia of the Modern World, Oxford University Press, forthcoming) and “Native Americans,” “Dar al-Islam,” “Ansarullah Community,” “Elderly,” and “Muslim Peace Fellowship” (in Encyclopedia of Islam in America, Greenwood Press, forthcoming). The poem is a folk song written in the Han Dynasty Musical Bureau yuefu style. ANONYMOUS (HAN ERA) wrote “South of the Walls We Fought” sometime during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.E.–220 C.E.).
